The Modern Gentleman’s Bath
Antioch, California
Scope: For this remodel, Carey Bros. Design & Build Remodeling created a primary bath that feels confident and tailored—anchored by clean lines, minimal grout joints, and a darker, grounded finish direction. The homeowner wanted a space that felt modern and masculine without being cold, so we balanced bold surfaces with streamlined lighting and a spa-level layout.
Key upgrades:
- Larger shower with bench
- freestanding tub
- large-format tile floors
- new prefab vanity with stone top
- upgraded lighting
- humidity-controlled ventilation
Features: Layout + Function Improvements
A bigger, better shower—built to be used
- The shower was expanded and designed for comfort and durability, including a built-in bench and tile detailing that keeps the look crisp and architectural.
Freestanding tub as a sculptural centerpiece
- A freestanding bathtub brings a high-end “suite” feeling to the room—less builder-grade, more boutique hotel.
- Large-format flooring for a cleaner look
- To reinforce the masculine design direction, we used large-format floor tile to reduce grout lines and create a calmer, more monolithic surface.
Fixtures + Finishes Portfolio
- Tile & Surfaces (the foundation of the look)
- Bathroom + toilet room floor: 32″ x 32″ porcelain tile
- Shower walls: 16″ x 32″ porcelain tile (also used to create a clean tile baseboard)
- Shower pan: 2″ x 2″ mosaic porcelain tile sheets for slip resistance
- Shower accent: 8″ x 48″ tile accent strip, two tiles wide, centered on the shower wall
- Tile wainscot + window sill detail: Tile continues as a wainscot and the window sill is tiled for a cohesive, water-resilient finish
- Schluter trim: Used at base, wainscot edges, sill, niche, and transitions for sharp lines and long-term durability
Vanity + Storage
- New prefab vanity with an included stone top and matching splash—a clean, modern focal point with practical storage
- Two recessed medicine cabinets for a flush, built-in look
Shower Glass
- Frameless pivot shower door + stationary glass—keeps the design minimal, sharp, and upscale
Lighting + Comfort Upgrades
- A masculine bath should feel intentional—not dim or builder-basic—so lighting and ventilation were upgraded throughout:
- Added more lighting, including recessed cans and updated vanity lighting
- Installed humidity-sensing ventilation to keep the room fresh and protect finishes
The Result
A primary bath that reads tailored, strong, and modern—with large-format surfaces, frameless glass, and crisp trim details that deliver a polished “high-end suite” finish every day.
