Designed for Dignity: A Custom Accessible Bathroom Remodel

Scope: Carey Bros. Design & Build Remodeling transformed a hall bath in Antioch into a safer, more accessible space with a curbless shower, linear drain, grab bars, ADA fixtures, smart shower controls, and custom tilework. When safety, accessibility, and everyday comfort matter, the details matter even more. For this Antioch home, our team remodeled an existing hall bathroom to create a more usable and safer space for assisted bathing—designed specifically to support a wheelchair user while maintaining a clean, modern look and durable finishes.

Features:

Accessibility-First Shower Upgrade

• Built a curbless shower with a 66″ linear drain for safer, easier entry
• Added an 18″ x 15″ shampoo/soap niche and installed proper blocking for future-proof strength
• Installed a handshower + showerhead and a smart digital shower valve (with required access panels)

Safety & Support Features:

• Reinforced walls with **blocking/backing** for bath accessories and **grab bars**
• Installed **three grab bars** and coordinated accessory placement for real-world daily use

ADA Fixtures & Custom Vanity

• Installed an ADA toilet with bidet seat (at the existing toilet location)
• Added a 33″ wall-hung ADA vanity with drawers and a plumbing cover for a cleaner look and improved access
• Completed the vanity with a granite top, polished edges, and an undermount sink

Tile, Stone, and Finish Work

• Installed 12″ x 24″ floor tile(running bond / 1/3 offset) and matching tile baseboard
• Tiled shower walls to 8′ high, including a 40″ x 40″ tile mural detail
• Patched and finished drywall to match existing textures, then painted with a coordinated two-color scheme

Electrical & Ventilation Improvements

• Added a new 20-amp circuit for code-compliant bathroom power needs
• Upgraded lighting controls, including a vacancy sensor
• Installed an Energy Star exhaust fan/light with a moisture sensor to better manage humidity

This remodel required careful planning and execution beyond finishes—such as locating the new linear drain, x-raying the slab for tension cables, coring the concrete, and restoring the slab after plumbing updates.

Work was designed to align with applicable California codes (including 2022 CBC/CEC/CRC/CMC/CPC and green building standards), supporting a safe, durable, and efficient end result.
