A Bathroom Designed to Age Gracefully
Livermore, California
Scope: This Primary Bathroom Remodel transformed an aging primary bath into a cleaner, brighter, and more accessible space—designed for safer day-to-day use without sacrificing style. The layout improvements focused on easier movement, a more functional shower area, and updated finishes throughout.
The Homeowner’s Goals:
- Improve comfort and accessibility in the master bath
- Create a more open, usable layout (especially around the toilet area)
- Upgrade the shower with safety features and better functionality
A key design upgrade in this Primary Bathroom Remodel was the introduction of a freestanding soaking tub, transforming the room from a purely utilitarian space into a personal retreat.
The tub was carefully positioned to serve as a visual centerpiece while maintaining clear circulation around the room. Its sculptural form softens the overall geometry of the bathroom and creates a strong contrast with the surrounding tile and cabinetry. This type of tub offers deeper soaking comfort than a traditional alcove tub and reinforces the spa-inspired feel of the remodel.
Plumbing was reconfigured to accommodate the freestanding installation, including precise rough-in coordination for the tub filler and drain to ensure clean sight-lines and long-term serviceability. The result is a tub that feels intentional, elegant, and relaxing—without compromising function.
Features:
Accessibility-forward layout updates
- Reconfigured the toilet area to reduce tight “confining” walls and improve maneuverability
- Added proper in-wall blocking for grab bars and bathroom accessories
Shower upgrade - Built a new shower layout with integrated bench seating and grab bars for safer bathing
- Framed shower niches for everyday storage (soap/shampoo)
- Finish and fixture refresh
- Updated vanity/lavatory area and lighting plan for a brighter, more modern feel
- Coordinated door/hardware and finish selections as part of a complete, permit-documented scope
Tile & Surface Finishes
The finish selections were chosen to balance durability, ease of maintenance, and visual warmth:
- Shower wall tile provides a clean, modern backdrop while enhancing light reflection throughout the space
- Integrated shower niches were finished to blend seamlessly into the tile layout, offering convenient storage without visual clutter
- Shower bench seating was fully waterproofed and tiled to match, reinforcing both safety and design continuity
- All tile transitions and terminations were carefully detailed for crisp edges and long-term performance.
Vanity, Fixtures & Hardware
- The vanity area was updated to feel lighter and more refined, complementing the new tub and shower:
- Updated lavatory fixtures provide a modern profile and reliable performance
- Coordinated hardware and accessories create a cohesive look across the space
- Concealed blocking installed behind walls allows for future flexibility in grab bars or accessories without surface-mounted compromises
Lighting & Overall Ambience
- Lighting upgrades were designed to support both function and mood:
- Brighter, well-placed task lighting improves everyday usability
- Balanced ambient lighting enhances the calm, spa-like atmosphere—especially around the tub and vanity areas
What sets this remodel apart is how the finishes and features work together. The freestanding tub delivers a sense of luxury, while the thoughtfully selected materials, neutral palette, and integrated accessibility features ensure the space will remain comfortable, stylish, and practical for years to come.
This project is a great example of how thoughtful remodeling can make a bathroom feel both more luxurious and more livable—with practical accessibility features integrated into the design (rather than looking “added on”).
