A House Rewritten: Kitchen Relocation & Primary Suite Addition

Pittsburg, California

Scope: This major whole-home transformation reimagined how the homeowners live in and move through their home. Carey Bros. Design & Build Remodeling was engaged to remove an unpermitted rear family-room addition and a failing retaining wall, then design and construct a thoughtfully integrated rear addition and interior reconfiguration that dramatically improved flow, functionality, and long-term livability.

The result is a seamless blend of new and existing architecture, anchored by a relocated kitchen, expanded dining area, and a private primary suite—all designed to feel original to the home while supporting future aging-in-place needs

  • ~800 sq. ft. new addition
  • ~800 sq. ft. remodel of existing living space
  • Full kitchen relocation
  • New first-floor primary suite designed for aging-in-place
  • Structural demolition, retaining-wall replacement, and hillside integration

Features:

Kitchen Relocation & Expansion: The kitchen was relocated into the new addition, allowing for a significantly larger footprint and better connection to adjacent living and dining spaces.

Design & Finish Features:

  • Custom cabinetry with a clean, transitional profile
  • Large center island for prep, seating, and entertaining
  • Durable quartz or stone countertops with eased edges
  • Tile backsplash extending to the underside of upper cabinets
  • Energy-efficient appliances integrated into the cabinetry layout
  • Improved task and ambient lighting with dimmable controls
  • Pantry storage created from the former kitchen footprint
  • This relocation allowed the original dining room to return to its intended use as a family room, restoring balance to the home’s layout

Primary Suite Addition (First Floor): A new downstairs primary suite was created to support long-term accessibility and comfort without sacrificing style.

Bedroom Features:

  • Generous room proportions with space for seating
  • Abundant natural light via new energy-efficient windows
  • Flush thresholds and widened clearances where appropriate
  • Integrated lighting and electrical systems designed for flexibility

Primary Bathroom Highlights:

  • Curbless or low-threshold shower with full-height tile
  • Pressure-balance or thermostatic shower controls
  • Floating or furniture-style vanity with stone countertop
  • Water-efficient fixtures compliant with California codes
  • Thoughtful lighting for both task and ambiance
  • Slip-resistant flooring selected for safety and durability

Interior Remodeling & Architectural Integration: Beyond the addition, approximately 800 square feet of the existing home was remodeled to ensure continuity between old and new spaces.

Key Improvements:

  • Sunken living room floor raised to align with main floor
  • French doors added to define the entry and living room
  • Fireplace retrofitted with gas and electrical for a modern insert
  • New electrical circuits added to support home-office flexibility
  • Flooring transitions carefully matched for visual continuity
  • Trim, doors, and finishes selected to unify the entire home
  • Exterior & Structural Work
  • Removal of failing retaining wall and unsupported structures
  • New foundation and framing engineered for hillside conditions
  • Exterior finishes matched closely to the original home
  • Roofing, windows, and siding integrated for a cohesive façade
  • Drainage and site work improved to protect long-term performance

The Result: This project transformed a constrained and fragmented floor plan into a spacious, modern, and future-ready home—one that supports entertaining, everyday living, and long-term comfort without sacrificing character.

The addition and remodel feel intentional, balanced, and timeless—exactly the outcome Carey Bros. Design & Build Remodeling strives for on every large-scale residential project
